Here’s the steps you’ll want to follow to prepare for and pass your content tests.

Step 1: Decide the content area to master

Deciding what you want to teach can be challenging if you didn’t specifically study one of these content areas in college.  It’s a good idea to search for free study materials online and review the types of questions asked to see if that is a content area you want to pursue.

Its natural to start to feel a little anxious at this point, but don’t worry.  The best test preparation systems help you gain confidence and the test taking skills needed to succeed.

At Teachworthy, we suggest you complete an application to our program (for free) and submit at least your unofficial transcripts.  This lets us evaluate with you the content areas that you might be most likely to successfully test in and that match your interest.

Step 2: Prepare using a proven system

Once you have narrowed down which content area to want to test in, its now critical to pick the right partner to help you prepare.  Some important questions to ask the test preparation company include:

  1. How many students use your system annually?
  2. What’s their success rate if they follow your recommendations?
  3. Is this online technology or do I need to score everything myself?
  4. Is this affordable?

At Teachworthy, we evaluated all these because for our candidates to succeed in becoming teachers, we want to point them to a tool that is most likely to help them ace their content test.  We found a perfect fit with Certify Teacher.  Their intelligent system helps candidates master the subject and is closely aligned to the actual tests you will take.  Plus, the price is hard to beat through our partnership.  If you score an 80% on their practice test, you are highly likely to pass your content test.

Step 3: Master the practice test

You’ll be investing $116 each time you take a content test.  Although you can take a content test five times, you have to wait 45 days between testing to re-test.  This could mean you miss the hiring cycle as well as spend 5 times the amount needed on testing.

We highly recommend that you set out to master the practice test before you actually test.  With Certify Teacher, the first step is to take a timed practice test.  This simulates the test experience and documents which areas of the test you need the most help.  Certify Teacher will then focus the learning content on your weakest areas until you have mastered those. Then you will move to mastering your next weakest area until all content areas have been mastered.

At that point, the Certify Teacher system will allow you to retest overall.  You’ll see great improvement.  If you haven’ reached the score of 80% yet, you’ll want to continue mastering your weakest content areas.  Plan to invest 3-4 weeks preparing for each content exam.  It will be worth the effort.

Step 4: Ace the content test

Now that you’ve mastered the content areas and validated this by scoring an 80% on the Certify Teacher practice test, you are ready to sit for the exam at a Pearson Testing Center.  You can register here.  You can find testing centers here.  Know that during the summer, testing dates tend to fill up.  Register early for these dates if possible.  Once you are registered, use that approaching date as motivation to practice more and increase your confidence.  You’ll do great!

All this effort is worth it.  Once you pass your content exam, you can officially enroll with Teachworthy to begin your online training, field-based experiences and attend the live 2-day Capturing Kids’ Hearts event.  Ultimately, you’ll be making a huge difference in the lives of children.
