Who Applies to Online Texas Teacher Certification Programs?

At Teachworthy, we’ve been helping people find a career with purpose and work that inspires them. Thousands have started changing lives by teacher certification in more than 50 certification areas.

So, that got us thinking. What does the data tell us about who becomes a Texas Teacher through our online teacher certification program?

Age

What we can see is that there are a large number of applicants that are recent college graduates and career changers.  There are also a large number of people that join our program towards the back end of their careers, often with the idea of “giving back”. Here is the breakdown:

  • 18-24 – 17%
  • 25-34 – 38%
  • 35-44 – 27%
  • 45-54 – 10%
  • 55-64 – 7%
  • 65+ – 2%

Gender

According to our numbers, 69.16% of alternative certified teachers are female. There has always been a discrepancy between male and female teachers – see this great article from The Atlantic – but a recent study shows that woman make up 76% of teachers nationally.  It’s refreshing to see that we are attracting more gender balance.

Race and ethnicity

Our qualified teacher numbers show that 44% are white, 28% black/African American, 22% Hispanic and 4% Asian.

Miscellaneous

A few extra stats we found were that our candidates:

  • Worked as a Substitute Teacher – 36.98%
  • Worked as Teachers Aid – 33.23%
  • Played College Sport – 24.67%
  • War Veteran – 9.6%
